51 Sophia Beck Coburn was born in the village of Lustdorf, near Odessa, which is a seaport on the Black Sea in Southern Russia. Her parents were German who may have emigrated to Russia from Germany or it may have been her Grandparents. The family was among the many Germans who took advantage of Catherine the Great's offer to come and settle in Russia. Since Germany was experiencing extremely hard times due to wars and economic conditions, an invitation was extended to the Germans by Catherine. Beck Coburn, Sophia (I845)

Verna Irene Heskett died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at Cambridge Manor Home in Cambridge, Neb., at the age of 89.

She was born Feb. 26,1919, in Red Willow County, Neb., the daughter of the late Charles Louis and Pearl Mae (Simpson) Heskett. She grew up on the family farm northwest of McCook and graduated from McCook High School in 1937.

She began working for Fallicks Bakery. On April 13, 1940, Verna married Marvin Raymond Heskett at Norton, Kan. They made their home in McCook where she worked in Customer Service for North Western Bell Telephone until retiring in 1978.

Many winters were spent in Mesa, Ariz., where they enjoyed square dancing and playing cards with friends and relatives.

They were members of the First Baptist Church in McCook.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin on Dec. 29, 2003.

Verna is survived by two sons, Harley Ray Heskett and wife, Viola of Emporia, Kan., and Michael James Heskett of McCook; one daughter, Linda Witte and husband, Dean of Cambridge; six grandchildren, Lynnette Honea and husband, Shawn, Cori Thomas and husband, James, Lori Druse and husband, Tom, Deann Hunter and husband, Gerry, Brad Witte and wife, Jessica and Janet Mitchell and husband, Donavan; eight great-grandchildren, Scott and Jackson Honea, Caleb Thomas, Gavin and Emily Druse, Brendan and Kaylee Hunter and Brodie Mitchell; three brothers, Ivan Hill and wife, Gloria, Howard Hill and wife, Marie and Don Hill and wife, Norma; and relatives and friends.

Memorial funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008, at First Baptist Church in McCook with the Rev. Ira Ransom officiating. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook.

Memorials may be given in her name and friends may sign her memorial register at Herrmann Funeral Home in McCook.

Herrmann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
