  • Notes  Born:
    • Sophia Beck Coburn was born in the village of Lustdorf, near Odessa, which is a seaport on the Black Sea in Southern Russia. Her parents were German who may have emigrated to Russia from Germany or it may have been her Grandparents. The family was among the many Germans who took advantage of Catherine the Great's offer to come and settle in Russia. Since Germany was experiencing extremely hard times due to wars and economic conditions, an invitation was extended to the Germans by Catherine.

    Name:
    • Sophia Beck Coburn arrived in America on May 12, 1885 with her brother Conrad, sister Katherine and Katherine's husband Henrich (Henry) Harsch and son jacob. The trip took 24 days. There was one stop in Havre, France. They must have sailed from Hamburg through the English Channel to La Havre and then on to America. Little is known how they all got from Odessa to Hamburg but probably by barge and/or train. The fare from Russia to America was about $70 which was not much but the ships were probably not very comfortable. (This information about the fare was taken from a paper written by Leonard Harch's grandson, Lester Harsh. Leonard was Henry's brother who came to America a year before Henry). Sophia was 28 and Conrad was 18.

    Died:
    • Sophia Beck Coburn died Sep 11, 1926 of "endo myocarditis". There was no mention of her asthma which she had. The one error on her death certificate is that Conrad was not her father's name. It was Jacob. She was 69 years old and buried in the cemetery north of Indianola, Nebraska.
